We truly live in exciting times. Technology affords us the luxury to live where we want and to work “everywhere”. Today we have many choices. You can choose to work in your hometown or transact business globally without ever boarding a flight. The ability to hire out your skills online on a job or project basis provides freedom and flexibility for stay at home moms, students with a class schedule that doesn’t fit into an on the ground job, or just anyone and everyone desiring to control their schedule. We use it as one of our marketing resources @airbookkeeper with great success. Technology and internal controls embedded in many of our accounting products lend themselves to remote bookkeeping with accuracy and integrity.
It does take discipline to navigate a self-directed career. Marketing skills are a must, but we would all benefit from learning how to leverage and position our skills so they are desirable in the global marketplace. More and more millennial and near or partially retired people seem to gravitate to this lifestyle. I recently became introduced to two sites that allow you to bid on projects. You set up your profile listing your skills, education, certification, and specialty areas, set your price and then begin to bid on projects. Even if you are already in business these sites serve as great lead generators to increase your existing client base. Or perhaps you have a job and just want a little extra income. These sites offer the flexibility of working your own hours and setting your own price (be competitive to win the bid though).
